Dr. Wanda Whitten-Shurney's lecture honors her pioneering physician father The National Library of Medicine (NLM) entertained a lecture on Dr. Charles F. Whitten (1922-2008), pediatrician, pioneer and co-founder of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America (SCDAA) at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD in February. Dr. Whitten was the first African American department head when he was named clinical director of pediatrics at Detroit Receiving Hospital in 1956, and he worked as an attending pediatrician at the Children's Hospital of Michigan from 1962 to 1999. Dr. Wanda Whitten-Shurney, director of the Newborn Sickle Cell Screening Program at the Children's Hospital of Michigan, and CEO of the SCDAA's Michigan chapter, gave the lecture in honor of her father and his work on what would have been Dr. Whitten's 90th birthday. In November 2010, NIH observed the 100th anniversary of the publication of the first case report on sickle cell disease. As a legacy of that event, NLM announced the acquisition of the papers of Dr. Whitten. Click here.
