Genesys trauma team repairs teen’s broken body
Clarkston High School student Kenny Olson did not expect to face two life-altering events in two years... two near death car accidents that led him to Genesys twice.

In March 2005, Kenny suffered major injuries to the left side of his head and broke many bones in his face when he lost control of his Grand Am while driving at high speeds in Lansing.

“I busted up my skull pretty bad,” is how he describes his first accident. After a few weeks at a hospital in the Lansing area, Kenny was transferred to the Genesys neuro trauma intensive care unit, which became the teenager’s residence until he was well enough to begin the rehabilitation process in the Genesys Inpatient Rehabilitation Center.

First-time parents from Clarkston choose Genesys

When looking for a hospital and an obstetrician, Clarkston residents Jennifer and Joel Kortges wanted a place close to home, a confident and competent physician, and a safe place. They were happy to find all of this with Genesys and Thomas Wright, DO.

“We talked with our family doctor (Larry Baylis, DO, family practitioner on staff at Genesys) and he gave us some names of doctors at two different hospitals,” reports Jennifer. “A friend of the family who is a doctor drove all the way from Sanilac County to deliver her babies at Genesys, so we felt that was a good recommendation.

Senior gets new knees in winter, bikes in summer
The summer after her first knee replacement, Flint resident Joyce Clevenger rode 400 miles on her bike. The next winter she went back to
Genesys and Mark Dyball, DO, orthopedic surgeon, for a second knee replacement so she could resume her long distance bike rides in the
summer.

The retired physical education (PE) teacher believes her torn up knees are a result of teaching PE for 28 years. “I guess I showed off to the kids too many times how I could walk on my knees,” she jokes. “Now I’m paying the price.” I taught 10 classes a day when I first started teaching – that’s a lot of jumping jacks!”

Senior keeps “goin’ and goin’,” thanks to Genesys
Eighty-four-year-old Iletha Cotton lives in her own home – happy, comfortable and pain-free – thanks to Genesys CHOICES, a palliative home care program that helps people like Iletha who suffer from a serious chronic illness.

A Flint resident most of her life, Iletha lives with congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and many complications associated with her medical condition. It is difficult for her to walk without shortness of breath. Her goal is to stay out of the hospital as much as possible.

Retiree remains breast cancer-free for six years

Flushing resident Shirley Orvis was happy to hear her breast cancer not only was very small, but also was caught by Genesys doctors in plenty of time.

The tumor was detected during her annual mammogram. “I’m very fortunate that I go for my regular mammogram every year,” Shirley points out.

When she went to Carl Gutekunst, DO, surgeon at Genesys, “I had the normal apprehensions, but I trusted him. He is very nice, and he made it so easy for me. And I ran across so many nice people at Genesys.”

Shirley had a lumpectomy and went home the same day of her surgery.

Back surgery at Genesys provides immediate relief

After a bad experience with her mother at another hospital, Grand Blanc resident Joanne Markwardt checked out Genesys and is now a Genesys fan for life.

“After several tests and a lot of frustration (at another hospital), they couldn’t figure out what was wrong with my mother, so I took her to
Genesys, where she was diagnosed right away!” Joanne retells her story. “I told myself that if I ever needed surgery, I definitely would choose Genesys!”

That day came sooner than expected. “I developed pain in my lower back and it got to the point where I couldn’t even stand up straight. I couldn’t even bend my head back in the shower to wash my hair … Leaning on a grocery cart while I shopped was the only time I felt some relief,” she reflects. “The pain was affecting every aspect of my life.”
