INSIDE THIS ISSUE:
| Genesys stroke team acts fast to save
woman’s life |
Genesys volunteer Joyce Topham won’t
let a few unexpected detours stop her from the active life she has
enjoyed for 80 years. Triple bypass heart surgery, a mitral valve
repair, a valve replacement and a sick husband have sidetracked
her, but, she keeps going and going, thanks to the “remarkable” care
she and her husband Sandy have received through the years at
Genesys.
Just when Joyce thought the worst was over, she got
blindsided one more time by the ticking time bomb – a stroke.
She woke up around 4 a.m., Nov. 13, 2007, and struggled to get
out of bed. “I couldn’t control my right arm and hand, and my
fingers were numb,” Joyce describes. Sandy quickly called 911. He knew
his wife was in trouble.

| Genesys trauma team saves life of jeep rollover
victim |
Driving around his property one night with
friends as he has done dozens of times through the years, Eric
Smith’s jeep suddenly rolled over. A dear friend was killed in the
tragic accident, two others escaped with minor injuries, and Eric, the
driver, was near death. He remembers very little of the accident.
“I supposedly was conscious when help arrived, but it’s
all kinda gray,” he says when describing that traumatic evening.
The jeep was resting on Eric; paramedics worked quickly to remove
everyone from the vehicle.

| Two hips replaced with new technique at
Genesys |
Paul Snyder remembers when the pain in his left hip
was so bad “I couldn’t even tie my shoes. Work was tough and
painful, but I kept at it,” the Bishop Airport police officer (and
retired Genesee County sheriff) shrugs his shoulders.
He’s
not sure why his hip wore out, but believes it may have something to
do with his 30 years of running, and his time with the Marines
“when we ran two to three miles every day.”
Paul chose
Genesys for the surgery when his doctor, Kevin Snyder, DO, sports
medicine physician on staff at Genesys, told him about a new hip
replacement technique offered by Bruce Lawrence, DO, orthopedic surgeon
at Genesys. “Dr. Snyder told me Dr. Lawrence would do a good
job.

| Lymphedema
victim finds treatment at Genesys |
Grand Blanc
resident Nina Anderson wants everyone to know she has lymphedema.
"I want others to know you can get help for it and you don't have
to live in pain, thanks to the help I found at Genesys."
Nina is a breast cancer survivor who developed lymphedema, a
condition that affects the lymph system, resulting in excessive fluid
accumulation in the body, abnormal swelling, and loss of mobility.
"I was always blown up," she describes. "I felt like I was
nine months pregnant every day, and it hurt too. At first, I
thought maybe it was my salt intake, but after following a special
diet very carefully, nothing changed. I was in so much pain, I had no
energy and I just wanted to sit and cry; I was so miserable. I
felt alone in the world with no help. I didn't know what to
do."

| Against all
odds, Genesys saves man’s life, legs |
Flint resident
Terry Hamm started complaining about the numbness in his leg …
“it would feel ice cold, then burning hot … I couldn’t walk, I had
to crawl around,” he reports. “It came on all of a sudden … boom!
It was there!”
Within a few days, the same sensation moved
to his second leg. By this time, Terry was completely panicked,
told his wife, Dianne, and she called 911 around 10:30 p.m., the
night the Hamms will remember for the rest of their life.
A
CT scan was ordered, and before the results were in, Genesys
vascular surgeon Brad Sweda, MD, had diagnosed Terry’s life threatening
condition. Immediate surgery was required if Terry had any chance
to live.

| Chronic neck pain gone after surgery at Genesys |
"It was terrible!" announces Diane McMillon when describing the
pain in her neck. “I couldn’t turn my head or lift my arms over my
head. The pain brought me to tears.”
She went to see her
family physician, Jonathan Arbogast, MD, family practitioner on
staff at Genesys.
“He couldn’t even touch my neck I was in so
much pain,” Diane reports. “I kept asking him, ‘what is wrong
with my neck?’
“Dr. Arobgast said to me, ‘Oh my goodness, we
have to get this taken care of right away.’ The pain was starting
to go down my left arm. He told me there was no time to wait. He
sent me to Dr. Guyot (Lisa Guyot, MD, PhD, neurosurgeon at Genesys)
and made sure I got in to see her right away.”
