INSIDE THIS ISSUE:
| Genesys OB team alleviates fears of
paraplegic |
A car accident at the age of 3 left
Fenton resident Candace Brandreth paralyzed and confined to a
wheelchair, but she was determined life would not short-change her.
When she and her husband Dave decided they wanted to have a baby,
Candace knew it wouldn’t be easy, but the soft-spoken,
strong-willed woman felt much more at ease when she found a team of
obstetricians at Genesys ready, willing and able to handle her unusual
case.
“My husband and I interviewed many doctors
before we chose Dr. Lapa (Martin Lapa, DO, OB/Gyn on staff at
Genesys). We were looking for someone who supported our decision to
have a child, and someone who would look out for my needs. We found
all of that, and so much more, with Dr. Lapa. He eased my mind and
helped alleviate my fears. “In fact, we met all three
doctors in the practice and they all made us feel very
comfortable.” (Keith Heslinger, MD; and Thomas Wright, DO; complete the OB
team.)
Throughout her pregnancy, Candace arrived for
her regular appointments with Dr. Lapa armed with a list of
questions. “He made the time to answer all of them; he kept me
relaxed and calm as much as possible. I was a very emotional pregnant
lady!”

| Man survives deadly cancer, thanks to Genesys
teamwork |
Tom Zorn listens to heartbreaking stories almost every
day as a member of the Children’s Wish Fund board. Now, he
is one of those stories – a story that offers an outcome full
of hope, thanks to the rapid response and synchronized teamwork
of Genesys.
The first inclination something was wrong
was at a Tiger’s game last year, Tom recounts. “I got
tired walking up the stairs; that doesn’t happen to me. I
thought it was a cold, but I was feeling weak and short of breath. It
came on so suddenly. I’m in good shape; in fact, the last
time I was in the hospital was for my tonsils when I was 8.”
On a Tuesday morning, Tom went to see his family
doctor – Sean Gilin, MD, family practitioner at Genesys –
who, after a few initial tests, sent Tom directly to the Genesys
Emergency department for an EKG. Less than 24 hours later, Tom was
having major lifesaving thoracic surgery. “Dr. Gilin called
the hospital and the team was waiting for me when I arrived,”
Tom recalls. “They found a heart murmur that had not been
there before.” A series of tests showed a possible blood clot
in Tom’s pulmonary artery.

| Genesys stroke team acts fast to save
woman’s life |
Susan Townsend remembers the
morning of her stroke, but the details are a blur. She’s just
thrilled she’s home, back to her daily routine and loving
every minute of it, thanks to Genesys.
When trying to
retell her story, Susan turns to her daughter Fymselle for help to
fill in the blank memories.
“I was talking with my
daughter, and I had a sensation in my head. It just
dropped.”
Her daughter continues the story: “I started
calling my mom’s name … she stopped talking. There was
no response. I got down on my knees next to her and kept calling
her name. After a couple of minutes, she lifted her head. I asked
her if she knew where she was. She shook her head and grabbed my
hand so tightly that it left a mark. I could tell she didn’t
know who I was.”

| Genesys wound center keeps man on his
feet |
The longer a wound takes to heal, the greater the
risk of serious infection and the greater the impact on quality of
life. That’s why Bob Sibilsky’s family doctor –
James Walker II, MD (family practice physician on staff at Genesys)
referred his patient to the Genesys Wound and Hyperbaric Center
promptly so Bob could get back on his feet quickly.
Bob
occasionally suffers from venous stasis disease, a chronic
medical condition where blood pools to the lower body and does not
recirculate, causing ulcers, swelling and pain.
At the
Genesys Wound and Hyperbaric Center, Bob received compression therapy
treatments weekly until his non-healing ulcer healed. This therapy
consists of a four-layer dressing wrap that compresses the
vessels in his leg and forces the blood to circulate. Bob’s
treatments – conducted at the outpatient center – take about
30 minutes.

| Retired educator finds “best” orthopedist at
Genesys |
“I never went to a doctor until I was 75 years
old,” announces Kathalyn Scott, as she sits at her dining room
table talking about her hip replacement surgery at Genesys and
how she initially fought it.
A teacher and school
administrator for 30 years at Pershing High School in Detroit, Dr. Scott
moved to Grand Blanc after she retired. She enjoyed long brisk
walks every day until “all of a sudden, my hip started hurting
and I wanted to know why. I had to start walking slowly and I
didn’t want to. I went to see my doctor who told me I needed a
hip replaced. I told him ‘I am going out the same way I came
in – no hip replacement.’”
A
strong-willed woman, Kathalyn had to take back her words because her
right hip started bothering her too much. “Honestly, I wanted
to holler because it hurt so badly.”
Her
physician convinced her to have the surgery. “He told me he would
send me to the best doctor. He said Dr. Sorscher (Michael Sorscher,
MD, orthopedic surgeon at Genesys) was the best.

| Genesys relieves golfer’s
35 years of back pain |
When Kevin Bushre met
with a neurosurgeon at Genesys about his aching back, he had one
question, “When can I golf again?
“She got
me back on the course about 5 ½ weeks after surgery and with
no pain,” he’s thrilled to announce when he talks
about Lisa Guyot, MD, PhD, neurosurgeon at Genesys who fixed a back
that had caused him problems for over 35 years.
“Sometimes my back would seize up,” he describes, “but
I just lived with it until about a year ago. I was carrying an 80
pound bag of salt and didn’t use the dolly as I normally do.
I wrenched my back and after a couple of weeks, it still hurt, so
I went to my doctor (Dale Hanson, MD, family practitioner at
Genesys). He gave me two shots of cortisone to see if that would
relieve the pain.” Within a couple of days, Kevin’s leg
starting hurting and it “kept getting worse and worse,”
he describes.
